Waging Peace (WP) is a non-governmental organisation that campaigns against genocide and systematic human rights abuses, with a particular focus on Sudan, Chad and the Central African Republic. As a UK-based NGO, we lobby the British government to use its influence to ensure the protection of civilians in countries where their rights are ignored or, indeed, their lives and homes in danger due to repressive rulers and regimes.

In particular:

  • We carry out frequent fact finding-missions on the ground – gathering first-hand evidence of humanitarian, human rights and political conditions.
  • We use the facts and testimonies we uncover to support the call for urgent, effective and measurable action from the UK government and the international community.

– We brought back over 500 children’s drawings of the Darfur genocide from refugee camps in Eastern Chad. The pictures were accepted by the International Criminal Court as contextual evidence and are being exhibited around the world. Drawings and messages expressing support are being collected throughout the world as a response to the Darfuri drawings.

–  We presented world leaders with the largest-ever petition to come out of Eastern Africa – signed by over 60 000 Darfuri refugees – appealing for action to end the atrocities.

  • We produce regular high-level and in-depth reports, weekly updates and detailed policy briefings on the situation in Sudan, Chad, CAR, DRC and Somalia, for leading policy makers, opinion leaders and journalists.
  • We work with the Darfuri community in the UK, facilitating their access to services and providing opportunities for them to speak publicly and engage in campaigning activities.
  • We coordinate the work of NGOs working with Darfuri refugees, so as to ensure the promotion and protection of Darfuri asylum seekers’ rights in the UK.
  • Waging Peace members broadcast regularly and contribute to opinion pieces in the press.
  • We run regular talks and seminars in parliament, schools and beyond – raising public awareness about ongoing genocides and systematic human rights abuses.
  • Waging Peace is a member of CRIN (Child Right Information Network) and the Globe for Darfur.

'African Democracy and Human Rights'

Letter to the Guardian

Tuesday 1 June 2010, Louise Roland-Gosselin

The snubbing of the inauguration of Omar al-Bashir by Britain and the US, (World leaders stay away as Bashir sworn in for new term in Sudan, 28 May) demonstrates the hypocritical stance world leaders continue to take to the Sudanese president. In April, the international community accepted the results of Sudan's deeply flawed elections, despite evidence of ballot-box stuffing, political intimidation and violence at polling stations, in the hope of keeping cordial relations with Bashir. His indictment by the international criminal court for war crimes and crimes against humanity has been almost completely sidelined and it is believed that the US is preparing to lift trade sanctions on Sudan. Better relations with Bashir, it is thought, will bring peace to Sudan – yet talks on Darfur are at a standstill and the government continues to bomb Darfur's Jebel Marra with impunity.

For over five years the world has pandered to Sudan behind closed doors, publicly issuing empty threats, which have resulted in conditions for the people of Sudan only becoming more desperate. It is time that Cameron and Obama took seriously the threat of a man who has killed over 2 million of his own civilians.
